Support the Memorial Temple
A Reply to Thinking Outside the Box
I was very interested to read the article by R.W. Bro. Stephen Roberts dated October 30th 2005 dealing with the future of the Masonic Temple.

Our Montreal Masonic Memorial Temple is a magnificent structure and is unique as a superb example of Masonic architecture. It has been recognized as such by Heritage Canada who, together with Provincial and City Heritage departments are giving every possible encouragement to us in our attempts to preserve and maintain this building for future generations. Do not forget that this building was built by our predecessors at the height of the Great Depression and that cannot have been easy for them. Are we of this generation to betray our heritage and to so easily give up in the face of some difficulties and adversity?

Editorial - Year's End
It gives me great pleasure to have received a great article from Shawenegan Lodge that will appear in this month’s Rough Ashlar. I would only hope that other lodges would follow suit. I have received many articles this past year from lodges in Montreal and the Eastern Townships but I would appreciate more from other districts.

The dead duck

A woman brought a very limp duck to the vet clinic. As she laid her pet on the table the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird’s chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, "I'm so sorry, but your pet has passed on."

The distressed owner wailed, "Are you sure?"

"Yes, I’m sure. The duck is dead.", he said.

In the late 1700s, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The "head of the household" always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the floor.

A Candidate for initiation was to be picked up and driven to the Lodge, but before this could happen the car broke down. The Candidate said as it was no great distance he would go on his bicycle. Just when he reached the top of the hill his chain broke. As the Lodge was at the bottom of the other side and all he needed was a back-pedal brake, so he repaired the chain with a cord he had in his pocket and free-wheeled downhill to the Lodge. Later that evening in reply to a toast in his honor, he said how proud he was to be a Freemason but could not understand, as he had told no one, how the WM knew that he had come on his own free wheel and a cord.

The end of another year is quickly approaching and we are into the holiday season. This is a time for family and friends. This is the time for some lodges to install new officers and for many lodges to have a Christmas social. My own Thistle Lodge will be having theirs on Saturday Dec.3rd at Saint Honore. We have been blessed this year as we continue to bring in new young members who are very active and want to learn. I have heard similar stories from other lodges as well. We have much to be grateful for this year, and many challenges and hard work to look forward to in the next.

Brethren, instead of writing a controversial editorial, I would like to wish you and your family all the best on this Holiday Season and may next year bring prosperity and health.
