The history of symbolic Masonry is to some extent one
of principles rather than of forms, regulations and
rigid custom. There have been times when the ceremonies
of advancement in Freemasonry have varied – and that
both in matter and in manner. The body of Masonry has
been kept intact, but the ethics, and other
considerations of circumstance and condition, have
modified, or extended, or altered customs to a great
degree.
