Confession of a One-Day Mason
Yes, I admit, I attended the Grand Master’s One-Day class on April 12, 2003. Before I begin it must be said that it was my first, and one of the most amazing experiences of the Craft.

It all started when Suzanne, my better half, asked me what a Freemason was. (She was talking on the phone to my ex-better half) Hmm… I hadn’t a clue, so I looked it up in a dictionary, and what did it tell me? Nothing! Definition: “a member of the Free and Accepted Masons.” Definition of Freemasonry: “The institution and practices of Freemasons.”

Well! That just wouldn’t do, so I read a couple of books that touched on the subject, and I was hooked.

Editorial - Freemasonry IS what Freemasons ARE
"What a splendid thing it would be if every member of a Masonic Lodge were a Mason". That statement was made some time ago by an outstanding Freemason who was addressing a Lodge in another area. Several interpretations might be given that statement. However, the speaker did not designate whether he had in mind one or several. It could be assumed that he intended it to include all of them. In any event, he expressed a bit of philosophy that should live down through the years.

Reply to "Open Installation Nights"
In reply to your request for comment on open installation nights in our Lodges, I would like to ask the following questions: When was the last time a public ceremony of the laying of a cornerstone was performed? How often is any Mason seen with regalia in public? I am fully in favor of any and all occasions whereby we invite family and friends to join us in our lodges and assemblies.

The Newly
Installed Master:
His Responsibilities
There can be little doubt that the Installation Meeting is the most important in the Masonic year of every Lodge. It is the meeting that marks the end of the old and the beginning of a new administration. It is the occasion on which the newly-elected Master takes over the gavel of authority and, together with his selected team of officers, assumes responsibility for the affairs of the Lodge.

Masonry or Shrine
At the board of general purposes held on Jan 30th 2006 a question arose "Why do some masons prefer to go to the Shrine instead of their lodges?" The Grand Master requested that I write an article giving my opinion. As I glanced around the room there were at least 10 very active Shriners who are also active masons. Let us compare both from the perspective of a mason that comes to lodge and sits on the side.

Tearing Down
I watched them tearing a building down -
A gang of men in a nearby town.
With a Ho, Heave-Ho,
And united yell..
They swung a beam
And the west wall fell.

Editorial - Handling Online Applications
The Rough Ashlar/Pierre Brute website, along with the Grand Lodge website, has brought in 148 requests to join freemasonry in the past 7 months. This is great news, or is it? When I heard that only 13 of this number have actually joined the craft something did not seem right to this old investigator. The interested parties fill out a preliminary application on the website and this is forwarded to the lodge secretary nearest the applicant's residence depending on his language request.

Thinking Outside the Box - Disappointments for the One-Day Class
Hats off to Bro. Ray Darlington and Bro. John Waagen, the two Shrine-Masons who are trying to put on a one-day class. These brethren are doing something to try and increase membership in our lodges, and in the Shrine. I applaud them for not just sitting around and bellyaching as many are doing; they stepped forward and said "I will put on a one-day class."
